Warwickshire village park locked from public after 60 years of community use
Warwickshire community find park they've used for almost 60 years, abruptly closed to the public by the school whose land it sits on, prior to the six-week school summer holidays.
Local residents have shared their concerns with 大象传媒 CWR's Ushma Mistry.
In a statement Welford On Avon Parish Council said they are in discussions with the relevant parties to come to a satisfactory resolution and in a joint statement from Warwickshire County Council and Welford on Avon Primary School it said: "The School has regretfully concluded that allowing public access to continue in the way it has is no longer sustainable. Although the public only used the school field outside school hours it has proven impossible to guarantee that the field is in a fit state for use by pupils the next day. 聽
"In response to a letter of complaint (which asked us to stand up to Ofsted) we referred to a recent case where a school was downgraded following a safeguarding issue, which led to the headteacher ending her life. This case was cited solely to emphasise the critical importance of safeguarding in schools and to explain why we must comply with all safeguarding regulations and requirements.
"It was never our intention to use this case to raise emotions or imply that anybody at the school's health was suffering. We deeply regret if our response was perceived in that way and sincerely apologise for any distress or confusion caused.
The School has offered to discuss alternative arrangements with the Parish Council such as the provision of a secure area within the field for play equipment. Warwickshire County Council is the ultimate owner of the School and its field. However, the law allows the School day to day autonomy over its operations, meaning that the County Council is not in a position to dictate how the School deals with this matter. 聽The County Council is seeking to engage positively with the School, the Parish Council and the local community, in the hope that an amicable solution can be devised鈥
