What sank the Gaul?
In 1974 the FV Gaul sank, with the loss of all 36 crew.
Half a century after what was described as the 'worst ever single trawler tragedy', some families of the lost still have questions as to how the Gaul sank. Leading up to the 25th anniversary of the sinking of the Gaul, Paul Murphy boarded a survey vessel, accompanying a crew who were attempting to discover how she sank. The survey, which used remotely operated vehicles on the sea bed, provided evidence which was used in the official inquiry into the disaster.
