Did social media fan the flames of riots?

The role of social media is being questioned for its impact on the unrest in UK cities.

Sir Keir Starmer has become embroiled in a war of words with Elon Musk, after the tech billionaire suggested that "civil war is inevitable" following violent unrest in the UK.

The owner of X, formerly Twitter, posted the remarks on the platform, which he owns, in response to a video showing people aiming fireworks at police.

The prime minister's spokesperson said there was "no justification" for Mr Musk's comments, adding there was more that social media companies "can and should be doing".

Incorrect social media posts about the alleged killer of three girls in Southport has fuelled unrest in cities across the country. The role of social media and misinformation is being questioned as it seems to be having a large impact on current events.

Dr Sara Wilford is an Associate Professor at Leicester's De Montfort University researching misinformation among middle-aged people on social media. Sara tells 大象传媒 Leicester's Ben Jackson that this age group is influential online, even though it might not think it is.
