Olympian Emily Campbell: ‘Women are incredible creatures, no matter what they look like’

The Team GB weightlifter on why she speaks out about body image.

Team GB weightlifter Emily Campbell joined Jessica Creighton in the Woman’s Hour studio this week.

She’s the first British weightlifter to win two Olympic medals in over half a century, after she won a bronze medal in the +81kg category at the Paris 2024 Olympics and a silver medal in Tokyo.

But Emily told Jessica that she faces a lot of criticism as a female weightlifter, instead of being championed for being ‘strong, powerful and inspiring’ as male weightlifters often are.

She’s been speaking out about body image and the pressures placed on women, saying women’s achievements and the impact we have on the world should be celebrated more, instead of just how we look.

Emily also spoke about why she chooses to compete with impeccable make-up and brightly coloured hair, to show women that they can be true to themselves and do what makes them feel empowered whilst achieving amazing things.

Listen back to the full interview with Emily on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Sounds – it’s the Woman’s Hour episode from 15 August.
