The tale of the vanished bugler of Kirkstead Abbey
Legend says he disappeared in a secret tunnel.
Kirkstead Abbey near Woodhall Spa was one of several in Lincolnshire destroyed during the reign of King Henry VIII.
Legend has it that a secret tunnel ran from the abbey to nearby Tattershall Castle and that a man, carrying a bugle to sound an alarm, vanished while exploring it.
But is there any truth in the story, and what does it tell us about how folk tales begin and spread?
