The return of snitching in Russia
The 大象传媒's Russia Editor Steve Rosenberg reports on how neighbours are turning against each other, as the war in Ukraine sees an increase in denunciations of so-called traitors.
Ever since the Kremlin鈥檚 full-scale invasion of Ukraine, there have been widespread accounts of Russians reporting fellow citizens to the police for anti-war views. This often leads to prosecution and, in some cases, prison sentences. The incidents have revived memories of the Soviet past, when informing on colleagues and neighbours was actively encouraged. For this episode of 5 Minutes On, our Russia Editor Steve Rosenberg has been meeting some of those caught up in this new wave of denunciations.
