Critical incident declared at trust over pressures
In October 2024 Leicester's NHS trust declared a critical incident due to "significant pressures".
University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL) NHS Trust said that its hospitals were "seeing a higher than usual number of patients needing care", with the Leicester Royal Infirmary's emergency department and the clinical decisions unit at Glenfield Hospital "particularly busy". People at the time were urged to only attend hospital emergency departments for life-threatening illnesses or injuries.
Leicester East MP Shivani Raja told our Political Editor Pete Saull she was 'deeply shocked' by the announcement. Former East Midlands NHS boss Roy Lilley explained why this happened in what was normally considered a lull period, and Medical Director Dr Nil Sanganee spoke to 大象传媒 Leicester's Ady Dayman.
