Reparations: should we pay?
5 Live listeners share their thoughts with Nicky Campbell
The PM Sir Keir Starmer is at a summit of Commonwealth leaders in Samoa.
Reparations for the UK's historic role in the transatlantic slave trade are not on the agenda for discussion but some countries say they'll defy the UK and talk about it anyway.
The Prime Minister of the Bahamas, Philip Davis, says "The call for reparations is not simply about financial compensation. It is about recognising the enduring impact of centuries of exploitation and ensuring that the legacy of slavery is addressed with honesty and integrity. We stand united in our demand for justice for generations who came before us and those of us who are still living with that brutal history.鈥
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has told reporters slavery was of course abhorrent, but the focus should be current challenges not "very, very long endless discussions about reparations on the past."
