'Diwali is not cancelled' say business owners

Businesses on Belgrave Road say they are feeling the effects of this year's 'scaled back' Diwali.

Leicester City Council had cancelled the annual Diwali lights switch-on event, although celebrations are going ahead on the big day itself.

But some business owners say that they have noticed a quieter build up in trade.

大象传媒 Leicester's Matt Smith went to Belgrave road to speak to business owners, and Shivani Raja, the Conservative MP for Leicester East who campaigned for the light switch on to be saved, spoke to Ady Dayman.

Leicester City Council say that 'As usual, we鈥檝e distributed 30 thousand copies of the annual Diwali guide in and around the area, and we鈥檙e also publicising the event using the many channels available to the council, including through the local media.'
