IKEA to compensate former political prisoners in East Germany

Tens of thousands of political prisoners were used as forced labourers in the GDR- the German Democratic Republic. An investigation in 2012 found that thousands of them were made to work for the Swedish retailer between 1960 and 1990.

This week Ikea said it would voluntarily pay six million Euros, which is roughly six and half million dollars, into a German government fund being set up to compensate the victims. Andre Wagenzig is a former political prisoner who worked for IKEA in the early 80s.
