Terminally ill adults who are expected to die within six months would be able to request help to end their own life, under proposed legislation for England and Wales.
The law would still forbid doctors or others from ending a person鈥檚 life. If all the criteria and safeguards are met, the substance to end someone's life must be self-administered.
Kim Leadbeater, the Labour MP behind the bill, said her plan is focused on 鈥渟hortening death rather than ending life鈥 and ensures "the strictest safeguards anywhere in the world".
But others, including Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey, say they worry some people will feel pressure and as though they are "a burden."
