Did a poltergeist haunt Epworth Rectory?

It was the 18th-Century home of the Wesley family.

Epworth Rectory in North Lincolnshire was the 18th-Century home of the Wesley family and is where Methodism founders John and Charles Wesley grew up.
For a few weeks in 1716 and 1717 a series of strange and inexplicable events occurred at the rectory. Many of them were documented by the Wesleys, whose children put it down to a ghost which they called 'Old Jeffrey'.
Was there a poltergeist at work, or was it an elaborate prank played by family members or disgruntled locals?
