Over the past five years Ghana has seen a wave of Africans from the diaspora returning to their ancestral land. That鈥檚 because of initiatives like 鈥楾he Year of Return鈥� which the government launched in 2019.

Former president Nana Akufo Addo said 鈥渨e believe we have a responsibility to extend a hand of welcome鈥� and that 鈥楾he Year of Return鈥� had been a 鈥済reat success鈥�.

But this movement isn鈥檛 without controversy. While diasporans celebrate newfound opportunities and belonging, many local communities feel excluded from the economic benefits.
