Secrets are still being uncovered from one of our most ancient Norman fortifications, which stood for centuries as an overgrown pile of ruins.

Thanks to a decade's worth of work from volunteers, the site finally has a secure future, with the ground free to access and explore. Yet mysteries remain, as the excavations continue, with questions over its size, and who exactly paid for modifications to make it bigger than its first iteration almost 1,000 years ago, as a motte-and-bailey castle.

Nicola Goodwin explores the site, alongside Surrey Garland of The Snodhill Castle Preservation Trust, and historical detectives Garry Crook, Nick Longman and Tim Hoverd, who keep enthusiastically scratching their heads at what keeps being discovered in Herefordshire.
