Why is Worcester so muddy?
Receding flood water has left behind debris and silt all over the city's footpaths and streets, after several bouts of high river levels since the summer.
Receding flood water has left behind debris and silt all over the city's footpaths and streets, after several bouts of high river levels since the summer. Residents and businesses have expressed concern.
Emma Davies reports.
A Worcester City Council spokesperson said: 鈥淭he City Council is responsible for keeping Worcester's adopted streets, footways and land clean and free of debris. During the last 12 months the City Council has cleaned riverside paths following flooding incidents 11 times. When the River Severn floods it leaves behind silt, mud and debris which can make these well-used areas slippery and unsafe for walking.
鈥淥n each occasion this involves cleaning all riverside paths and car parks and public spaces, effected by flooding, between Pitchcroft and Diglis. The length of time each clean takes depends on how quickly the river recedes. We understand how important the riverside areas are to residents and visitors to Worcester, so bringing them back into use after flooding incidents is an important priority to the City Council.鈥
