The Leper Hospital founded in Burton Lazars
St Mary and St Lazarus Hospital was one of the most important leper hospitals in England.
The Leicestershire village of Burton Lazars got its name from St Mary and St Lazarus Hospital, founded by Robert de Mowbray between 1138-1162.
The hospital was one of the most important leper hospitals in England and was the principal English hospital of the monastic order of St Lazarus of Jerusalem, a military order devoted to the foundation and protection of Christian leper hospitals.
The building no longer exists, but the former hospital complex can be seen by a series of earthworks of the foundations of the original building, including the chapel, infirmary and domestic ranges. Surrounding these are a number of ditches and ponds which appear to have been used for treating the sick and infirm.
Ben Jackson explored the site with historian Peter Liddle.
