When Katherine Ashton went into the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough for major cancer surgery, she says she flagged her diabetes "every step of the way".

But now a hospital trust has apologised to a her after she fell into a diabetic coma following that operation.

A specialist said it is likely her coma was linked to a medication given to her after the surgery which is known to carry the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis, a dangerous complication of the disease.

Katherine complained to the South Tees Hospitals University Trust about the treatment she received, and wants more training and awareness around diabetes for hospital staff.
