How criminal gangs are 'ruining' the environment

Yvette Austin, the ´óÏó´«Ã½'s environment correspondent in the south east, looks at illegal waste tips, and how the industry could account for nearly a fifth of all England's waste.

Illegal waste dumping costs an estimated £1 billion a year in England – causing our landscape and environment to suffer.

Government data suggests around 18% of all England’s waste may be handled illegally. That’s around 34 million tonnes, enough to fill 4 million skips.

The ´óÏó´«Ã½'s environment correspondent in the south east, Yvette Austin, has spent many months investigating how the criminals are operating, and looking into how can we all make sure our waste is handled responsibly.

In this episode of the 5 Minutes On podcast, she follows large lorries as they tip loads directly onto the ground in the Kent countryside.
