Where an Iranian oil tanker had been burning off the Chinese coast for more than a week, there is now a large slick of some of the most toxic oil. The Sanchi was carrying 136,000 tonnes of condensate when it collided with a Hong Kong freighter on January 6. The 32 crew members are all now believed lost.
It was carrying 136 thousand tonnes - almost one million barrels - of condensate, a light crude oil.Richard Steiner is an Oil Spill Environmental Specialist based in Anchorage, Alaska, and he says that while the fuel cannot probably be recovered, wildlife can be kept from the "plume" of toxic condensate.
