Afghan government officials say the acting US defence secretary, Patrick Shanahan, has assured them that the US will not abandon the Afghan security forces in their fight against terrorism.

The comments emerged after Mr Shanahan's meeting with his Afghan counterpart in Kabul, on a visit that comes amid a flurry of diplomatic activity involving Taliban militants.
