New Zealand volcano erupts: At least five people are dead
Twenty-three people have been rescued but conditions are hampering the operation.
Police say that the situation on White Island, also known as Whakaari, is too dangerous for rescuers to land because of the risk of further eruptions. Tourists were seen walking inside the crater just before the volcano erupted. Police say it is too early to confirm how many were injured and how many remain on the island. They have been unable to communicate with anyone there.
Also the presidents of Russia and Ukraine are due to meet today, for the first time, at talks aimed at ending the conflict in eastern Ukraine. And Russia is also facing a four-year ban on competing in all major sports, and hosting major international events, after failing to comply with the demands of the world anti-doping agency.
