George Floyd death: Juneteenth

America remembers the abolition of slavery

How has the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis changed the way people are marking Juneteenth? June 19th is the date on which the abolition of slavery in the United States is celebrated. We explain the history and speak to people taking part in events across the country.

We also hear a conversation between three African-American woman who have researched their ancestry to find out more about forebears who were enslaved. How does that knowledge shape how they view this day?

President Trump was due to hold a campaign rally today in Tulsa, Oklahoma, a city where a deadly massacre of black Americans took place in 1921. Holding a rally in that city, on this date, was felt to be insensitive by many, so it was postponed for 24 hours. We'll hear the conversation in Tulsa.

We'll return to the coronavirus outbreak with one of our regular medical experts. Dr Megan Murray explains the latest headlines and information about the pandemic and will answer your questions. Send us a WhatsApp message: +447730751925 or tweet us @大象传媒OS.

We'll continue to focus on Latin America and hear stories from Peru and Colombia on how communities are dealing with the disease.
