Episode 5 – Michelle Bachelet
Michelle Bachelet served as president of Chile from 2006 to 2010 and again from 2014 to 2018, the first woman to occupy the position. When General Pinochet came to power in 1973, her father was detained, tortured and died a year later. Bachelet and her mother were themselves held in Villa Grimaldi, a notorious secret detention centre. Bachelet became more seriously involved in politics after Chile made a transition to democracy in 1990. She became minister of health and then became only the fifth woman in the world ever to hold the position of minister of defence – a role that boosted her popularity, enabling her to win the presidency.
