Why am I embarrassed to fall over?
Answering your questions about life, Earth and the universe
When listener Diana fell on her morning run, her first instinct was not to check her bruised hand, but instead to get up as quickly as possible and act as if nothing had happened. She felt embarrassed. But why? Meanwhile, her son Marley loves to watch fail videos that, mostly, show people falling over. So how can falling – something that can cause serious injury – elicit both embarrassment and laughter?
In the name of CrowdScience, presenter Caroline Steel puts her own body to the test. She spends a morning with clown and physical performer Sean Kempton who teaches her how to fall safely and, more importantly, in a funny way. As we hear from experts on embarrassment and humour, Caroline tries to put theory into practice as she falls, repeatedly, in public.
