Confronting Expectations with Steven Wilson

Steven Wilson with Roland Orzabal, Lucy Rose and Andy Partridge.

Musician and producer Steven Wilson is this week鈥檚 host of Music Life. Born in London and raised in Hemel Hempstead in the UK he developed an interest in music as a child and was heavily influenced by Pink Floyd. His dad built him a multi-track tape machine when he was 12, which allowed him to start experimenting with sound. He formed two bands in 1986, No Man and Porcupine Tree, both of which came to define much of his career. His music covers everything from rock, to ambient, to electro pop, and he鈥檚 worked with Elton John, Guns N' Roses, XTC, Pendulum, Yes, Marillion, and Black Sabbath. He鈥檚 just released his 7th solo album The Harmony Codex.

Joining him are three musicians he鈥檚 in admiration of.

First up is Roland Orzabal, a British musician, singer, songwriter, record producer, and author. He is best known for co-founding of one of the most influential bands from the 80s, Tears for Fears.

Next up is Lucy Rose, the British singer-songwriter who started out performing vocals with indie act Bombay Bicycle Club before becoming a successful solo artist in her own right. More recently she鈥檚 worked with Paul Weller, and she鈥檚 just finished her new album.

And finally, Andy Partridge, a British guitarist, singer, songwriter, and record producer who as founding member of cult rock band XTC, many call the godfather of Britpop.

Together they talk about the effect of fan expectations on the creative process, whether the world needs any more new music, and if 鈥渞etro mania鈥 is stopping rock music from evolving.

In part 2 of the show Steven guides us through a playlist he鈥檚 called Nostalgia For Childhood, with tracks from Tears For Fears, Virginia Astley, XTC and more.
