LegendsMonday 17th September's Legends show was presented by Sir Paul McCartney. Paul shared some of the tracks that got him into music, artists that have inspired him, some current favourites and a few of his own songs thrown in too. Plus he told lots of stories about growing up, song-writing with John Lennon, and how he first heard about Elvis Presley. Check out the tracklisting and if you heard the show, leave us your comments using the form below. Check out the Legends photo gallery Tracklisting |

No Rolling Stones in the mix. The man is clearly green with envy over the fact the stones are superior to the beatles in every way. Can we please stop harping on about the beatles being so amazing? They werent. They were a great band but no better than many others of their time. Lennon was fantastic but McCartney??? Hey lets have another listen to blackbird!!!! I think not.
charlotte staffordshire

What a gift we have! Paul McCartney! Ultimate living legend! His new album is inspiring!
Richard Dodwell in New York City
I listened to the replay of this radio program after hearing the program plugged on former Top-40 station WABC in New York. One of the stations that inspired the pirates that inspired Radio 1. The program is great radio, period. A selection of songs that takes one on a journey through the last 60 or so years, with interesting commenatary. We now find that Paul is also an extraordinary radio presenter. The 大象传媒 really should offer this old age pensioner a show. He states at the end of the show he likes being a DJ. And he probably needs the extra money.
haz, stoke on trent
it was super kwl doodey chumI LOVE PAUL MCCARTNEY =)

MORE THAN ANYTHING HAS A GREAT VOICE FOR BROADCASTING. ON THE MATTER OF MUSIC, HE KNOWS ABOUT IT THAT WHY HE IS A REAL MUSIC LEGEND.
Mea, Melbourne Australia
Thanks Paul, very touching and uplifting program, I hope there will be more!
Rosie, UK
I'm sorry but, with the exception of the Beatles and Fred Astaire, what an awful selection of songs. And where were the Wings &/or solo material and the Buddy Holly songs? Still, made for interesting listening even if the best songwriter ever does seem to like listening to some rubbish! The Sex Pistols? I ask you!!
Camilo from Chile!!!
A little moment of joy with my friend Paul...
mark, on the run somewhere in the west
beautiful, well done Paul. who's next now ?

In a world where 'legend' is such an over used word, this was a show by someone who truely deserves the title! Make the most of him while we've got him. FANTASTIC.

Paul you carry the Beatles legacy in great form!!!! and Happy B-Day 大象传媒 Radio 1,
Barry, Gillingham
For once, the term living legend is wholly appropriate. And despite what our sour Scottish friend says (Silverginger), they'll be playing the Beatles for a lot longer than the Proclaimers!
Paul Hughes
Nice One Paul, But . . . why no Buddy Holly on the play list? As for Blackbird . . . what a great song to play on the old acoustic. You and John . . . not to forget George, I think you did alright with that little beat group that you all used to play in. I believe they'r e called The Beatles ! ! . . . . they'll never catch on you know !!! (LOL) Paul (Mc)H
Dave, Liverpool
A quality bloke with so much to say! Macca has so many awesome stories to tell, I think I speak for the whole planet by saying his songs, stories and thoughts are timeless! A star forever! Well done on your radio show and new album!
Michael, Sydney
This show was great. I'd like to hear Paul host more radio.
Philip, Belfast
Wow, how surprising that a third of Ego McCartney's playlist was his own material. Yawn.
Patrick Bell, Cotgrave
Pure Class. Perhaps Radio 1 will now realise that Macca is still as relevant as ever and will take his new recordings seriously. Songs like House of Wax and Only Mamma Knows from his new album would be played on every show if they were on a Killers album.
Ren茅, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
It's nice to hear Paul again as a DJ after theOobu Joobu shows of 1995!

You're a legend sir, every song he choose was brilliant (Although his version of Bip Bop a lula and possibly Long Tall Sally is better)Sexy radio voice as well. Although seriously whats with just playing Beatles songs Macca. You were in another band too>

What an amazing man macca is! still miss Lennon :(
Derrick in Springfield, Virginia, USA
Soulful list. I wouldn't change a thing. I'll probably never have the chance to meet Sir Paul in person, but I'd just like to say that he's been a great influence/inspiration on the person I've become. Thank You.
Joanne Thailand
A truly brilliant show and the best radio I have heard in ages...Sir Paul's thoughts about 'Imagine' were heartfelt and very moving. Sir Paul is a natural.

Made my year, best thing I have heard on the radio!

Inspired. The man is truly a living legend and it is a real shame that neither John nor George are here to also shed some light on their favourite music over the past 40 years. Paul is a national treasure!
Steve, South Wales
Really enjoyed the show. It's nice to appreciate the influences and tastes of a true 'living legend'. 'Listen again' rules.

Wayne in Fairfax, Virginia, USA
Sir Paul is indeed a good DJ! One thing missing: his contemporaries among the British rock/pop songwriters. What about Ray Davies? He gave you and Lennon a run.
Sherri, USA
So glad to have the opportunity to say that as much as Paul admires Gene Vincent's "Be Bop a Lula", he surpassed that version in his own unplugged video (I think from MTV). The whole video was great, but wanted to have the video because of his rendition of that song! Also appreciated hearing of the love and appreciation Paul has for Brian Wilson.
Ana from Mexico
Someone asked if we can have Sir Paul as a regular DJ... I support that idea. Lovely show, I had a great time
Ronnie Dick Blackie, Uneaton the famous very 'litt
This is 'fuzzy logic' at it's best. Does SIR Peeps draw his multi million pound pension with this show? Legend has it that Ringo, John and George lived under the 'mighty egoed' ones hours producing per talent shadow. We bow in awe SIR mac......... Your contribution to the taxation system under PM Macca will nay be forgotten yah.The lord works in mysterious ways.........
Sean, Dublin
Pure Class from Sir Paul - great mix of the old and the new from someone who has always had his finger on the pulse...

bit low playing his own tunes. bob dylan doesnt do that on theme time radio hour! best song of the night by gene vincent.
paul from london
Great show, though Paul's memory plays tricks when there is a bit of publicity in the offing. There was a period in the '70's when John and Paul never spoke and had not one good word for each other.John's vocals on A Day in the Life are still awesome.
David, Burnley
Enjoyed Paul's show. Now it's time to ask Ringo!
Astrid, The Netherlands
Had some fun tonight! And your right about Hey Jude. I have experienced that in a crowd of 10.000 singing people. It was sensational! Thanks Paul and Radio 1.

Lovely evenings entertainment from Sir Paul, some strange selections but typically brave. Get the man signed up radio 1, he needs the cash.

I loved your song choices but was blown away by The Guillemots Little Bear. Going to have to buy their album now. Thanks Mr McCartney!

The best bit was when he dropped 'When You Were Young' by The Killers. It's always good for a legend, such as Sir Paul, to endorse a quality modern band.

Radio 1 must be complete idiots not to have Macca on radio at least once a week.
Ale Maldonado Puebla, Mex.
Great show, very interesting, but, i think Sir Paul's voice sounds strange, maybe he's sick a flu or something, but, after all, he's a true legend, thanks Paul!!!

Tingles down my spine - fab memories of the 60s hearing the music and Paul's voice! Went to see Brian Wilson last week who played a tribute to Macca - his favourite song "She's leaving home" - it was an amazing concert and both are great legends and genius of music. They just "do my head in" as Paul said on his programme! "God only knows" brought it all back - just loved every minute!

I listened to Paul McCartney's Legends show and it was amazing! I've always loved the tracks he played and I was dancing along with my nine month old son who was lovin' it too! Thanks Radio 1 for a fun night!!!
Sean, Belfast
An absolutely fantastic collection of tunes - great to hear that Macca has retained his enthusiasm for music after 40+(?) years and hasn't become jaded or contemptuous of other artists like many of his contemporaries - his love for music still shines through.
Jamie Young
Uncle Paul is a leaving genius, he is the modern day Mozzart. He was the melody behind the Beatles, a proven muscial icon yet behaves with such dignity. He has used his fame and fortune to promote important world issues and is an inspiration to me musically and personally. All you need is love Paul.
Donniell, St Andrews
I just happened to tune in while making tea in my kitchen and Paul was talking about his song writing experiences with John. I had planned to take the tea upstairs and put myself to bed, but I stood their listening (and dancing in my pjs to Elvis) until his set was finished. Can he be a regular dj? And for that matter, can I be present for Dave Grohl's tonight? Amazing. Amazing idea.
Noel, Dublin

Linda Ward - Wolverhampton
What a great start to your Legends Series and what a LEGEND!Such a diverse Tracklist-Fred Astaire to the Sex Pistols. Also great to hear Paul talk about his memories from going to buy his first record to writing with John, and how a song can reduce him to tears. Just like some of his great songs can to us. Thanks Radio 1. More Please.
Martyna (from Poland)
Groovy!!I am going to get CDs of Vincent, Charles and Richard immediately. Because I'm only 18 years old and I'm learning the music from You, from The Beatles.(Can you imagine, that I first heard The Beatles when I was 14? The first song I've heard was "I Saw Her Standing There" and it's changed my whole life!! You are the BEST and so cute and you tell great stories;)also have raelly good radio voice. Thank You, Paul!Lots of luv! Martyna

I like the beatles too, but, including 4 of their hits is a bit of a liberty isn't it. Nice to see him give john lennon his dues though...
Brian O'Connell-Liverpool
I enjoyed the programme. Paul has a good conversational style and maybe he could do more programmes along the lines of Bob Dylan's Theme Radio Hour. Next time I'd like to hear him talk about Buddy Holly who must have been a huge influence on Paul and The Beatles.

Andi...Virginia Beach, Virginia USA
Very interesting to hear what such a legend finds interesting to listen to. Glad to know he didn't stop listening to good music after the Beatles broke up like so many others.
Alistair, London WC2
Most of Sir Paul's selection will be familiar to anyone with an interest in the Beatles and Paul's music, as his inspirations have been well documented down the years. I found his selection of contemporary music a bit underwhelming. I can't help wondering what he really puts on to listen to at home or in the car. Thanks for an interesting programme.
James Nason, Edmonton AB, Canada
Great show. I can't wait to online listen to the rest of the series. Paul was great and picked a great set list too! Thanks Radio 1.

Paul, your love for John is genuine and touching, as always. Have you considered recording an album of John's songs? The "Save Darfur" would have been richer for having you on it. Great show, mate!!

Thoroughly enjoyed the show. Paul, as usual was engaging, witty and modest. It was interesting picking up the bits of information he gave out before the songs, e.g. J.S. Bach inspiring "Blackbird"..and who knew he was a Sex Pistols fan!
Tal, Westport, Connecticut
You were great on the radio, I have all your LPs. You selected some great songs for the show.

Oh yeah! Paul McCartney your the greatest! Its nice to hear that you like it when people say the are learning blackbird, and that you'll even sometimes show them how its done, and that you like it when people sing Hey Jude. I'll definately sing along if you ever come back to Toronto (hint hint) and I'm lucky enough to see you! Loved hearing all your little anecdotes Paul! (like how blackbird was inspired) Most of all however, it was so touching to hear what you had to say about John.

Have just 'listened again' to Paul's show...it was great! He always comes across very naturally, a truly genuine guy. I feel like he's a real friend although I've never met him. I enjoyed this hour with Paul McCartney so very much. The various songs of all kind of artists chosen by Paul with his nice and interesting explanation at each song.Maybe 大象传媒 Radio 2 can offer him a job as DJ, One Day A Week. So great the pleasure of the internet, sitting behind my desk on my computer with a glass of red wine and Dutch cheese on the other side of the Nord-Sea and being 'live' with Paul McCartney.'Little Bear' what a beautiful song. Good choice,Paul. And so sweet the way he always talks about John Lennon. As Paul sings in his own song:"I really love you".Thankx for being with us, Paul and I have catch your sent 'vibrations of love'.

I enjoyed the show. Paul has a good disc jockey conversational style, but I was surprised not to hear a Buddy Holly track. Is Paul hoping to do a series, like Bob Dylan's Theme Time Radio Hour?
Chris Gilbert , Godstone
This show was a great way to start i loved it and ive learned some more about the legend. Loved how different the music was aswell. Thankyou Sir Paul.

The legendary liverpudlian must have spent a hard days night coming up with his 15 songs for his playlist. A bit like a bride on her wedding day... something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue! A great choice!

The Beatles........overrated garbage.

Great show, Paul, Thanks . I discovered a great track by the Guillemots. Just one small critic, no rare McCartney tracks here ( demos , unreleased stuff ) . Through the miracle of the internet, I was able to listen to Sir Paul as a DJ on 大象传媒1. First of all, let me congratulate 大象传媒 1 on its 40th year of serving the public great music.Sir Paul was great and he did not surprise me at all in his selections. All the "old" music he played reflects the music he has created. Some of the contemporary music is reflected in is latest works. He is an ardent student of pop music and contunues to evolve without appologies (and none are needed!).Again, good work 大象传媒 and Sir Paul.
Rachel Peterborough
A great show. It was good to hear some of the stories behind the songs and what he is influenced by currently. An hour isn't really long enough perhaps this could be become a regular feature. Looking forward to Dave Grohl tomorrow.
