Non Vivo (Senzate)鈥. After buying a copy of the record, she took a year to arrange for someone to supply English lyrics to the Italian hit. Dusty achieved worldwide success when her friend Vicki Wickman and Simon Napier-Bell supplied the words. Simon Napier-Bell claims that 鈥渙ne night after dinner we wrote them together without seriously considering that they might be recorded鈥.
When it came to recording, Dusty Springfield was a perfectionist and during the session to cut the song, she had problems with the level of echo in the studio. As the engineer went downstairs, he noticed the acoustics in the stairwell seemed good. Not wanting to waste this, he dragged Dusty downstairs and recorded the song with her singing into a mike suspended halfway down the stairwell. A brilliant vocal performance was captured, giving Dusty her first (and only) million selling chart-topper.
In 1971, a live recording of the song also became a success for Elvis Presley, reaching number nine in the UK charts.
