Tom from Northampton The words don't seem to fit the music very well!
Anthony Ong Kuala LUmpur the sound of gilbert has been lingering my mind for the past 30 years of my life
Alan Noon/Banstead this song brought a tear to my eye as a youngster, and despite all the musical style changes i've been through(settling with the Smiths !!) It still has the same Haunting effect on me-in my alltime top ten.
Allister Gourlay Glasgow UK I was 13 when I bought the album this comes form and even then it made me cry...today im 47 just listened to Vonda Shephers version..and bam made me cry all these years later!
Gilbert O'Sullivan was highly underated!
What a brilliant lyric and song.... sob!
jef aaron, jersey.ci the guitar break in "alone again.." is the reason i took up guitar, i loved it and had to play it myself.
Al Rickston, Canada I was a lonely 14 yr old at summer camp the first time I heard this song. I was mesmerized by it, listening to it over and over again. I could truly relate to the heart break.
Life's improved a lot for me in the last 33 yrs, but this song still stirs up old ghosts when I hear it.
A gem! One of the best, ever.
Ron Morgan, Hull (exiled Scouser) Without doubt, this song has to be the number 1 saddest song ever written/produced by anyone. Gilbert O'Sullivan deserves more credit for his work. I have listened to his music since 1970 and have continued to buy his records. Gilbert knows how to relate to everyone's everyday problems, etc. At least Steve Wright is a big fan!!
Calum McGilp, Shropshire I was introduced to this song via a Schweppes advertisement. It's a classic and yet it appears once in a blue moon on radio playlists. Is it because its too sad?
I'm surprised that Morrissey hasn't cited Gilbert O'Sullivan as one of his musical influences!
Tim Grogan, Redditch Alone Again (Natrually) is beautiful, funny, strange, sad, and most importantly ORIGINAL.
Gilbert is brilliant. He's up there with Lennon and McCartney, Elton John, Neil Sedaka, Carole King.. you name 'em he's up there with them.
I recommend a absolute (but hardly mentioned) gem; 'Stranger in my own back yard' album. Most underrated, every track is great, lyrics great and some songs predating by years, Morrisey for pathos. But for sheer originality the 1980 single "I love it But.." a song about writing a song! (and it's a great song too!!) Genius! Only Gilbert could and would dare to do this. Thank you for the music, it lifts the spirit and kick- starts the emotions!
Stuart Maconie or somebody please,
please, please, can you chronicle Gilbert's career?? in a Radio 2 Special?? Go on you know it makes sense!
Philip Grundy I really believe that Gilbert O' Sullivan was unforgivably under-rated as a singer / songwriter over the years. His beautiful melodies and touching lyrics are never played as often as they deserve, in the way other artists of the period are. I would very much welcome a radio biography on the man,(i.e. his road to promenance, his current occupation in life, etc;)
Miguel Medina Lima Peru My kids love it as I loved it as a kid. They ask me to play it over and over.
roy-ashtead could have been written about my own mother.wonderfully observed slice of life.
rob wallser plymouth quite simply the saddest song ive ever heard though it maintains a beauty and aviods lapsing into bitterness,a poignant comment on the inevitability of life and a fine example of dignity through music
les newman GRIMSBY A wonderfull song of immence personal feeling coupled with a finger tapping melody to die for Gilberts finest work by a country mile
PAUL LEEDS The only song which as ever made me cry not because of any bad personal experiece .But
purely and simply because it's such a beautiful song with so much meaning (if that makes sense)
Jeremy Slaybaugh, Latham New York I have to say that I heard this song when I was a young man and the melody and words caught me immediately. As my life has gone on I find I can identify with the person in the song (except with wanting to commit suicide, of course) in that I have lost both my mom and dad to very tragic circumstances and have received my share of kicks. Thank God Im still here and still keep going! Thank you for the song, Gilbert, that lets us know we arent alone when we are hurt!
Nneoma , USA This is one of the saddest songs I've ever heard. But that was what stopped me in my tracks when I first heard it. I think sad music and lyrics are beautiful simply for what they are. They are healing to the people that listen to it. This song has helped me to understand my world, because I am very much a loner. I love Gilbert for writing this song
Lorraine Andrews, Hyde, Cheshire The saddest and the best!
Rob van der Vaart from The Netherlands The combination of lyrics and melody in Alone Again (Naturally) is superb and typically Gilbert O'Sullivan. Although it only reached #21 in the Dutch charts in 1972 it still is often aired on Dutch radio, together with huge hits like Nothing Rhymed (#1), Clair (#4), Matrimony (#4), Get Down (#3), Ooh-Wakka-Doo-Wakka-Day (#7), No Matter How I Try (#13) and I'll believe it when I see it (#11).
Nicole Tonglet Beaufays BELGIUM There are surely many songs by Ray that I love that I would find it terribly difficult to choose the best one.
But it's a fact that I always come back to this one.It is also the one which is the most played in my "stupid country" that seems to have forgotten everything about Ray.the song itself doesn't speak about himself though (His mother is still alive, God bless her)but it is true that the words are very hard .Like if there was always something to knock you down when you think everything is all right. For someone who has had problems (like I had once and Ray knows about all that)believe me it is the perfect song to listen to if more over you don't feel like going futher on,if you see what I mean.During those dark years of mine I used to listen to this song or to Requiem by Mozart(!!!!!!!!!).
So Yes I do think it is a very sad song and the only thing I'm happy about is that it doesn't concern Ray himself.
You should also listen to the version of Alone Again in the cd Best Hits and Rarities, released in June in Japan.I even find it better, the way he sings, ommits words, he looks even more frail and when you know the man, sure you would like to protect him, for as everybody knows he had to endure many things in his life and especially the lack of respect mediass have had for him for a while now.(I'm not talking about the 大象传媒, don't worry!)
Nicole
PS: Sorry for the mistakes, but I normally speak French!
Jane Bozian, Shropshire Writing about the death of one's parents (real or fictitious) is no easy subject. To do it in verse with a beautiful melody to boot...... that's where Gilbert O'Sullivan's talent lies.
Dave Williams Bristol I first heard this song when I was about 13 years old and thought it was the saddest song ever. Even to-day, with it's haunting melody and beautiful bitter-sweet lyrics, it can still be quite emotional to listen to. This probably also proves why this song is so popular and why it will be played many times, many years from now.
Garry Smith, London Most probably the saddest song in the world.
