Paul Oliver, Warwicks Slowhand reaches all the parts that other guitarists just cannot reach!!
Matt Rumble Cambridge If someone asks me, what is the most remarkable thing that has happened in the last century, i'd have to say the life of Clapton. This man is a genius, yet everything comes to an end eventually, so before he dies, i hope he gets knighted.
James Faris,Acton,London Having read some of the messages,I cannot say anything that I have'nt felt about EC for a long time, the man is in a class of his own,and I wish him well now his personal life seems to bring him so much happiness,go for it Eric!
Ian Pritchard - Ashford, Kent Layla's riff is recognisable worldwide and
Eric Clapton's guitar is so distinctive, it is impossible to miss it, on whichever track or with whichever band he plays.
The man's a guitar genius like no other.
Frank Manning - Rockland County, NY I think Layla is true classic - every note and lyric of that song brims with emotion of the blues and intensity of rock. I enjoy both his solo and band work but if I had to choose one I'd pick his band work. I think he really shines in that respect but his new album - 'Back Home' is awesome. He's my influence and one of the reasons why I choose to study music. What makes him so great, in my opinion is his guitar playing and tunes - such as Layla.
Linda Colbourne, Worcestershire At the time I first heard Layla I only realy liked Classical Music. Layla is so full of passion and melody it took my breath away, I think I grew up a bit!Its still one of my all time favourites.
Mike - Spain To celebrate my 40th birthday, my wife Diane, brought me surprise tickets to see Eric at one of the performances at the Albert Hall in 1990 - what more could I want. I'll never forget sitting 6 rows from the front, so powerful.
Richard - Zurich, Switzerland Eric in my opinion is the best rock legend that ever lived. I've been a fan of his since I was that high. I think Layla, depsite the face I've heard it 1000 times already is still a great tune. Always a pleasure to hear it.
Marcus Kohlberg - Arvika, Sweden Eric's music is just...perfect. If you havn't seen him live - do it, and it'll change your world.
david walsh beckenham inspirational..followed his career ..from the crawdaddy club to the albert hall
Graham - Mid Wales I came to recognise eric late in life - but I find I cannot get enough of him, I turn up the volumne and close my eyes - sheer bliss and the best track ever has to be Layla - keep going Eric your the Best
james pettersson phoenix az eric clapton is the best guitarist of all time, he has it all, speed, feeling, and most of all great structure to his solos.it is when you break down one of his solos that you see the genius.
Ian Davey Maldon Essex UK One of my favorite tracks, Crossroads (WoF).
I remember when Layla was released not one record shop in Chelmsford had it in stock, being only 14 at the time I took the train to Romford (my birth place )and found it in stock at Wells music store, price 拢1.75!!!! I still play the original LP today.
Thanks Eric, See you in May.
paula davies - shotton deeside north wales It is a brilliant piece of work. I love the simple way he writes, Wonderful Tonight is one of the few true love songs.
I have seen him several times & enjoyed every concert. I especially enjoyed the Blues Night at The Albert Hall, this is where he really shines.
I found an old video rec I did back in 1993 when he Eric was interviewed by Sue Lawley, he had just had been through the worst year, he was saying that all he really wanted was a family. Well he now has all he wished for , after a long wait he really deserves it.
Eric's music means a lot to so many people & has helped me through a few tough times.
Randy B. - Arlington Hgts., IL. USA Eric,I love the spiritual messages I hear in your music.I never stop relating to them , especially Pilgrim,Journeyman and Behind the Sun.Thank you so much for helping me build my relationship with My God. I am truly Grateful for your E.S.& Hope!
David, London Ky For over 30 years Mr. Clapton has been my mentor. Of coarse he would be more of an absintee mentor- concidering he knows nothing about it:> Never the less, happy birthday Mr Clapton. I just purchased the DVD for The Crossroads benefit...fantasic show. I hope to hear more new material soon, if not, the old stuff will do just fine. I do play guitar and am proud to say all my family, friends and fans know how much I enjoy the Eric Clapton style of guitar music. Thank you Mr Eric Clapton, Bluesman.
David
John Crisp Seattle, WA USA Some 34 years after hearing "Layla" the very first time live on stage in San Diego I remained totally blown away... until I heard the set of guitar solos EC hit when playing "While My Guitar....." at the Albert Hall in 2002.... As Dhani said at the end of that moment "Eric, you are the man..." Happy 60th EC
Alula, London Layla has one of the most memorable and recognisable riffs in the world, but what makes the song even more "powerful" is it's unplugged version... it sounds so different yet so beautiful. Eric Clapton is unique, a musical master and guitar genius and I am so happy his music has been in my life.
Thank You Eric, I wish you a happy 60th birthday and many more years of music to come
Paris Queralt/ Lleida(Spain) When I started playing guitar with "maestro's songs" I discovered a metaphisical atmosphere, specially with LAYLA. Is a greatest song!!!.
Clapton still is the best global musician around the world.
Thanks.
katsu, canada that's one of the best"shivers run down my spine riffs" ever for sure! i enjoyed the the radio show very much, thank you bbc!wish you a very happy birth day eric!
Mark Isted / Toronto Canada Happy Birthday, Slowhand. You have brought hours and hours entertainment into my life and have introduced me to some "extremely fine" music.
Continued health & success!
Emily, Newark The sound of Eric's guitar is like no other, and Layla shows both its power and beauty. After my mother played it to me, I was hooked and wanted to hear more. One of the most special moments in my life was to stand metres away from Eric playing Layla in the Albert Hall. Life doesn't get more perfect than that.
Wolfgang Schueer / Germany This man still has it. Being such a great musician all over the years is fantastic. Thanks you Eric for all the great music and Happy Birthday
Chris newman leeds, wakefield I think Layla is the greatest riff ever, and things will always be that way,
Chris, leeds/wakefield In my opinion clapton is one of the greatest guitarist in the world, if not the greatest, simply because of the emotion he puts into his songs and his songwritin is extroadinary,
sina/ardabil Very nice, Just Eric
pattie, Buenos Aires without eric so many people outhere would麓ve never known what blues is about...please never stop giving us your beautiful music...
mark dodd gateshead the most emotional guitar playing ever played
Yvonne Mullen Penn Bucks This song will always stand the test of time, just carry on Eric, with what you do best, making music it just gets better.
Rhonda Kelley, Montgomery, AL USA Eric Clapton is the greatest musician of our time, possibly of all times. Blues, Rock, Reggae, or even a little country, the music is always phenomenal, his voice is never the same, yet always perfect for the song and type of music.
Edward, London Eric is the best guitarist on earth!!!! Hope theres many years of his wonderful music to come. HAPPY BIRTHDAY ERIC! (for 30th march)
CLAPTON IS GOD!
Alicia, Lincolnshire Simply the most recognisable guitar riff in the world. Nobody comes near it or close to it. One of a kind. It has to be the best guitar tune in the world. Awesome!
Cagey, Northampton CLAPTON IS GOD.
Kath Southampton I think this song is amazing!! Eric Clapton is a pure geius! His songs are so depthfull, especially this. And as most music lovers should agree - thats one hell of a riff!!
Robert MacColl When you think blues,You think clapton. When you think clapton you think legend,I love having his music in my life.
kirsty, manchester It's a fantasic song, for me because its timeless. My dad is a massive Clapton fan and i am too from being exposed to his music from a young age,and the song still retains its power today.
Gareth, cramlington I used to hate this song with a passion - it was the song people used to put on the pub jukebox and imagine they knew about 'rock'.
Then I heard Jim Gordon's wonderful piano coda - odd that a drummer could play so beautifully, but then those were different, multi instrumentalist times (Jim played drums on the first Bread album; their eventual bass player Larry Knechtel is reputed to have been the piano player on Bridge Over Troubled Waters.)
I can't remember how many cassetes I wasted trying to get a perfect edit with just the piano part.
Then years later, just as a relationship was breaking up, I heard the unplugged version, and realised that under the bombast and fury of the original studio version of the riff was a good song trying to get out...
Sarah, Harrogate I couldn't find anything to beat this song until I heard the blues version. Terriffic.
dc of hawaii Listening to the lilting piano part at the end is beauty in it's purest form...
Ronald of Surrey Clapton is by far the best guitarist of all time !!! He is god !!!
Mik, Leicester The opening riff sends shivers down my spine. A work of genius.
