'Without You'
Nilsson
Harry Nilsson
Do you think Badfinger's own version has been unfairly overshadowed by Harry Nilsson's big hit?

I can't listen to this without a shiver running down my back - it's the most poignant, heartfelt expression of loss.Pure grief - very cathartic!

Badfinger's version is brilliant - and kudos for writing such a fantastic song. However, Nilsson's is the definitive version, a beautiful heartfelt rendition that is possibly the best break up songs ever. I'd rather not comment on Mariah Carey -As my old Grandma used to say "if you haven't got anything nice to say, don't say anything"

Shirley / GLASGOW
I agree! I can't listen to it either! lol Something about it - a classic!

Chucky G Brooklyn, NY
Nilsson's version is a classic, one of the great vocal performances of all time. It is highly polished. Badfinger's version is raw and it certainly stands on it's own. Two totally different interpretations and both great.

I think Nilssons version is the best due to his voice suiting the song,as the ex manager of THE IVEYS I think I can give an unbiased opion.

Pete Fenelon, York
A classic example of Higher Schmaltz. Crude but terribly powerful.

Darren, London
An amazing song which sounds brilliant by Nilsson and Carey. I do think Mariah's version is better because of her vocal talent. She doesnt often do cover songs but when she does its because she has been touched by the song, which means she gives it so much emotion. Very Talented Woman.

Brett, Everett Washington
The original Badfinger version is the best in my opinion. Nilsson contributed a good deal in bringing this well written song to the main stream, but the original has more soul. It almost sounds like a early 70's Beatles tune. Priceless.

Karl, Oslo, Norway
A sad discussion. We should remember Nilsson for many songs. For "One" - one of the most remarkable pop songs ever. For his fantastic cover of "Over the rainbow". But not for "Without you"... (and who can listen to Mariah Careys version without shivering ... in disgust?)

Andrew Moore , Staffordshire
After listening to the Bad Finger version, I can safely say that it is one of the finest cover versions of a record I have heard, but of course no cover version measures up to the original which is certainly true of "Without You".

Jack Denman, Fullerton California
The very first time I heard this song, I knew, without a doubt, it was going to the top of the charts.

Usmaan Siddiqui
I adore this artist, his seductive, beguiling, alluring and romantic voice.

Frank, West Lothian
I'd probably agree with most that Nilsson's is the definitive version of the song but no one has yet mentioned that rock band Heart did a version of Without You on their 1978 album 'Magazine'. Ann Wilson's vocals are every bit as powerful as Mariah Carey's but thankfully without the unnecessary and highly annoying "flutterings" which typify the latter's work.

Ken from Abingdon again
I have recently heard Badfinger's version and still think that Mr Nilsson's version is the best. The seeds were there with Badfinger but Nilsson took the song to another level entirely in my opinion.

John, Deal
If you want a definition of emotional pain, this is it. Nilsson's interpretation is peerless - sorry Mariah and Badfinger - there can only be one perfect version.

Simon
One of the most beautifully tragic songs ever written. Although I cannot abide the Mariah Carey version, the woman has no soul and completely missed the point. The Nilsson version is definately my favorite although I do like the Badfinger original with it's vocal harmonies on the chorus.

Ken, Abingdon
I haven't heard Badfinger's version, but I think that Nilsson's gentle approach suits the sensitive nature of the song much better than Mariah Carey's octave-spanning feats. Somehow her interpretation detracts from the message - would someone in that much pain really sound so exuberant about it? Having said that, the Carey version was out around the time I had a break-up, and I just couldn't listen to it for about six months as it was too close to home. Since then I've heard Nilsson and he knocks spots off Carey. What a great song.

Paul, Birmingham
I'm grateful to Badfinger for writing the song but the only version to be listened to is Harry's. Maria Carey's version was irritating because of her vocal athletics. And if you like Harry's "Without you" then try his "I'll never leave you alone"

Malcolm Ipswich
One of the few cover versions to top the original. Even Badfinger themselves sang the song Harrys way after it became a hit. No one before or since has had a remarkable voice like Harry.

Jake
"Very beautiful song. Nilsson lacks the vocal power Mariah Carey had in her version. Carey really brought out the true meaning of the song. When I listen to her version I get the chills it's so good."

robert/montreal
hmm ... weird (& wonderful);
