The making of the Awards globe
Isaiah Tongayi Garanewako....Artist in Residence WOMAD 2002 and designer and maker of 大象传媒 Radio 3 World Music Awards 2003.
Isaiah is an artist living and working in Johannesburg, South Africa. As a child in rural Zimbabwe, he and his friends would use left over wire from fencing and other discarded debris, such as bottle tops, shoe polish tins and cans to build amazing individual vehicles.
For most of the kids, wire toy making was a passing phase but for Isaiah it developed into an art form. After training as an electrician, he moved to Johannesburg, where he became more and more inventive, creating pieces that reflected his new urban environment. When Isaiah was invited to take up the residency with WOMAD, he jumped at the opportunity to expand his horizons. He is now part of a vibrant movement of artist/ makers in towns and cities across Southern Africa whose work resonates with their urban surrounding, reflecting the soul of modern African city life.
The remarkable thing about his work is not just his technical proficiency, though that is impressive in itself, but rather the way in which he manages to incorporate imagery that elevates it to the realms of highly desirable art. An important aspect of his residency in the UK was the 大象传媒 Radio 3 commission, to build a large scale working radio sculpture, which was displayed at the WOMAD festival, Rivermead. His small-scale radios were a festival 'must have' and his globes were snapped up as beautifully constructed mementoes of another weekend of music and art from around the world.
He was delighted to be asked to create the' World Music Awards. For WOMAD and Radio 3 it has been a privilege and a pleasure to work with such an inventive and talented young artist.
