It's the second time this multi-cultural Madrid based group have been up for one of these awards. The first was after their third album Cruzando El Rio in 2001 and this nomination comes in the wake of Fiebre ('Fever'), their aptly titled 2003 album, which captures them on a night in Toronto the year before. A brace of new songs kicks things off in rousing style before Radio Tarifa revisit their small but perfectly formed back catalogue, drawing most heavily on the 1993 debut "Rumba Argelina", which became a surprise hit just as the original core three members were on the point of breaking up.
Live albums are rarely essential but Fiebre shows Radio Tarifa's meticulous studio creations taking unexpected new directions and they sound warm and energised without being hurried or over-excited. Apparently the show was a cathartic experience for the band, who had arrived in Canada after a testing tour of the US marred by harassment and paranoid official reactions to the links their music makes with Arab culture. Presumably the 'authorities' were not objecting to the Sephardic elements, nor the flamenco, rumba, rock or early music styles that make up the bulk of their intoxicating modal mosaics.
It doesn't look like Radio Tarifa will be spooked into changing what they do to suit the present political climate. And anyway, it would be difficult to imagine their albums without the haunting melodies Vincent Molino plays on the ney, an instrument absolutely integral to their sound.
As founder member and spokesperson Fa铆n Due帽as told journalist Tim Cumming in a recent interview: "If we want to know our history, we have to go back to the Arabs...go to the British Museum and you will find a ney there in one of the Pharoah's tombs, dating back to 1700 BC. And this is what we play."
