Dutch-Brazilian fusion band Zuco 103 constantly set out to discover new frontiers in music. Fronted by Lilian Vieira, a Brazilian native who possesses huge hair, a wide smile and a soulful nature, Zuco 103 mix classic Brazilian songcraft with electronic beats, jazz flavours and a silky r'n'b sway. Across three albums they have built a strong following in northern Europe as well as a lot of attention from Sao Paolo's burgeoning electronic scene.
Founder members Stefan Kruger and Stefan Schmid were excellent jazz musicians before plunging head-first into electronics. Realising they needed a gifted female vocalist to give soul to their electronic soundscapes they came across Lilian Vieira. Not only did she possess a gorgeous vocal but her immersion in Brazilian song and rhythm gave the band a strong foundation from which to venture from. Kruger and Schmid assert their personal style and working method, which combines the use of live jams, traditional composing/arranging skills, programming and sampling. To this Lilian Vieira brings her skills as a vocal improviser, she is the binder of the band.
Ever since the 1999 release of their debut album Outro Lado, the music of Zuco 103 has been acclaimed as a sound that continues to push musical boundaries, appealing both to club kids and an older audience who prefer the persuasive easy rhythms of Brazilian music. This could be a mess but the trio's determination not to simply glue a Brazilian rhythm to an electronic groove means each song sounds fresh and natural. And with Lilian's smoky, honey flavoured vocal accenting each gracious Portuguese vowel the effect of Zuco 103's music is undeniably seductive.
"We employ all kinds of rhythms," says Kruger. "Not just samba and bossa nova but drum'n'bass, hip-hop, funk and dub. What Lilian brings to the music means it never loses its Brazilian flavour yet we don't feel that we are tied to making every song sound Brazilian. We are more Brazil-meets-Europe-in-a-soundclash and the result is Zuco 103."
The name Zuco comes from a Brazilian word that describes a mixed juice, which is a perfect word for this music.
