When the meeting came to an end, all the animals went out to eat sand, but rabbit followed tortoise, and he saw tortise sing to his mother. The mother brought down the big feast of food, rabbit controlled himself and after tortoise left, he ate the crumbs of dried fish. Later he observed tortoise sing the mother-sky song and he learnt the song.
The next time, making sure that tortoise was far away, rabbit sang the song and tortoise's mother came down. She was suprised to see rabbit, and rabbit told her she should return to heaven and tell the sky god to send rain or there will be so much trouble for her son. So tortoise's mother returned to heaven, and to save her son, she made the sky god send rain. Crops grew all over the land and there was no more famine. But when tortoise was reported in the animal meeting he was cast out, and he was very ashamed, so he has to live inside a shell. And that is why if tortoise sees any animal coming towards him, he will hide in his shell.
It's from a special Nigerian Yoruba tradition of folk tales used to entertain and to train children in morals. There are various call-and-response tunes that can add colour to the story.
