A favourite song:
Chaminuka is a song of praise to 'Chaminuka', a Shona spiritual prophet. This is an ancient mbira song that sings of this great King and likens him to the lion who lives in the jungle. Everytime I hear this song my hair stands on edge. The melody is so beautiful, everytime I sing this song, it triggers something deep in my body. I think of the land struggles of our people and I invoke the spirit of my ancestors to guide us all to live in peace and harmony.
Gamura Makaka is a song of protest against an old person in the village who is bossing everyone around. The song complains about this old stubborn man who is a bit of a 'know-it-all' completely closed to suggestions from anyone else in the village. Through the mbira spirit, the song cautions this stubborn elder to mend his ways so that he not only regains his respected social status as a village elder but the whole community will be better off.
