听听Listen (2'53) to Kim Ho Ip talk about his music
It's a piece I suggested to Nafees we could do as a sort of fusion at the Mela. It sounds sort of Middle Eastern in temperament, and it's originally a solo piece on the Yang Qin. It added up to a very interesting kind of question and answer between the Yang Qin and the Sitar, and I think it was very successful.
The name's taken from one of the provinces in China, called Xin Jiang, which is the North Western part of China, and it's a very rhythmic kind of piece. We didn't actually write out any parts or a full score for the composition, we just talked with each other and then improvised on the melody. And I think it's particularly suitable for the music from the tradition in Pakistan as well because they don't actually notate music down. We're freer on stage when we're not bound by a score, so I think that was a very interesting part of it.
