TOOTING CHARIOT FESTIVAL |
|
|
On the August Bank Holiday Monday, the high street of Tooting, south London was the location for a stunning spectacle of Hindu worship. An elaborately decorated chariot standing 21 feet high was imported especially from Colombo, Sri Lanka for the event. It was drawn through Tooting's main streets by local worshippers from the Muththumari Amman Temple. The chariot housed the deity of the temple, which is a focus for local Tamil worship. The procession was accompanied by traditional drumming and horns, with trade stalls and vegetarian food along the route.
