Lady Smuck in her Lair
21 Feb 2002
Visitors to the nether reaches of the Archers message board may be entertained by the occasional exploits of three snaggle-toothed, boss-eyed hags known collectively as the Weird Sisters.
We tracked one of them to her Wakefield redoubt and unmasked her as Scottish-Irish-Yorkshire-born Mary Sanderson.
How did the epithet Lady Smuck come about? "In The Bull, [a section of the message board set aside for non-Archers conversations] I mentioned some fictional beer called Mary’s Mucky Brew, except I typed it as marysmuckybrew, and some people read it as Mary Smuck. The name eventually stuck to me. Then when I had a piece published in the Borchester Echo, I ennobled myself, and I’ve been Lady Smuck ever since."
Mary is not quite as old as The Archers, having celebrated her 50th birthday last year ("you could hear the dirty laughter and breaking of glasses in Leeds"). She first heard the programme as a babe-in-arms. "My grandfather was one of the first fans, and he used to carry me around listening to it".
Mary and husband Phil, ("Lord Smuck" as he's usually known on the message board)
Mary has now clocked over a thousand posts on the Archers message board, which she discovered through her work as a part-time IT teacher.
"I was teaching a class about the internet and I showed them the ´óÏó´«Ã½ website, which is very good [thank you Smuck], and I thought we’d look at The Archers pages. As soon as I saw it, I thought I’ve got to have some of this! When you find another listener, you can let off steam to them. Or in my case fifty years of pent up rage. Particularly about smug Jennifer Aldridge and her squeaky voice…" Visit The Archers Message Board>>
