Sid's delight
Friday 9 March 2001
Most people think that one Jolene is plenty. But three? Archers listener
Viv Robins tells us about her celebrated Archers dinner parties:
" I cook dinner using recipes in Jennifer Aldridge鈥檚 Cook book and from a number of different locations which I then list on the menu so guests can match them up, linking for example the Tarte au Citron with Grey Gables, the Rich Beef Ragout with Bridge Farm and the Stilton Celery and Pear Soup with the (late lamented) Nelson鈥檚 Wine bar."
"All the guests must come in costume and there鈥檚 a prize for the best one."
"Some of the most imaginative outfits have included a mute Snatch Foster complete with flat cap and furry bunny down the trousers (in lieu of a ferret),
We've had Marjorie Antrobus armed with dog-chain and flea powder and Pat Archer resplendent in professional white overalls and cap (for the yoghurt-making)."
"It鈥檚 also reflected the chronology of the programme as characters who are now no more than a distant memory captured the imagination of the time. One of the prizes went to a friend who came as Spanner, Roy鈥檚 racist partner-in-crime (remember him?) complete with greased hair and stick-on pustules. At other times the prominence of a particular character in the storyline has been reflected by an abundance of guests all wearing similar outfits. Once it was wild child Kate,
another time Jolene, with one friend even going to the trouble of hiring the holster and the stetson from a professional outfitters."
"They鈥檝e all been great fun and every one has thoroughly joined in the spirit of the thing - except perhaps the husband of one addict who ducked out of the post-dinner quiz on the grounds that he didn鈥檛 know anything about The Archers. He was later discovered next door furtively feeding the questions to another Archers devotee down his mobile phone. Chris Tarrant would have been proud!"
