Chick Among Cats 22 March 2002
Archers listeners often have
more than just The Archers in common, as listener Sybil Chick discovered
when she started to visit The Archers message
board.
"I’ve met lots
of people on the message board who are interested in cats, or who
sing in choirs like I do", said Sybil from her North London home,
which she shares with print manager husband Barry and three "pre-owned"
cats. "It sounds odd to say ‘met’ when we’re really just sending messages
on a computer, but that’s what it feels like."
And these cyber meetings have
led to real meetings, with cat breeder and fellow message boarder Ina
McAllan: "We got to know each other and then met up at cat shows."
Sybil has been listening to the
programme for as long as she can remember: "I’m five weeks younger
than The Archers, so Tony and Eddie are my contemporaries. I
heard about the message board from a trailer on Radio 4. I often ring
my mum or sister to have a natter about what’s happening, and now with
the message board it’s even more so"
Graphic designer
Sybil isn’t short of hobbies. She’s a member of MENSA and contributes
cartoons to that organisation’s Cats special interest group.
"At the moment I’m learning about
website design, and I’m hoping to set one up soon." An Archers fan site,
perhaps? "No, I think, it’ll probably be about cats!"
