Listen to Excess Baggage for 2听October听2004
MICHAEL PALIN听
2听October听2004
Presented by Sandi Toksvig
On this week's programme Sandi Toksvig talks听to听the ultimate Englishman abroad, Michael Palin.
Michael Palin is probably better known for his travel adventures than he is for his part in Monty Python. He has also devised and starred in television series like 'Ripping Yarns', he has written several television plays and feature films, a novel 'Hemingways Chair', and he won a Bafta for best supporting actor in 'A Fish Called Wanda'.听听 His听 television travel听series have included 'Around the World in 80 days', 'PoleTo Pole'听听and more recently 'Sahara'.
Michaels latest project is the Himalayas. He takes on the full length of the Himalaya, from the Pakistan-Afghan frontier through India, Nepal, Tibet and Yunnan to China, before recrossing the mountains to Assam, Bhutan and Bangladesh.
This journey involved six months of hard travelling. It involves some evocative locations, the Khyber Pass,听 ancient cities like Pesawar and Lahore, the mighty peaks of K2, Annapurna and Everest and听the gorges of the Yangtze.
听
In the programme, he talks about what it was like听traveling through politically sensitive areas like Pakistan's remote north-west frontier, Kashmir and Nagaland. He recalls his brush with Maoists while filming in Nepal, and explains what it's like to receive advice from the Dalai Lama - who recognised him from his Monty Python days!.
