IAN RANKIN - REBUS EDINBURGH
1 January 2005
Presented by Sandi Toksvig
In this week's programme Sandi Toksvig explores Rebus's Edinburgh with Ian Rankin, Britain's best-selling crime writer.
Ian Rankin is the creator of Inspector Rebus, an Edinburgh cop. Rebus knows Edinburgh and not just the casual city that the tourist knows. Rebus knows the underbelly of the city and the purpose of the early novels was to show the side of Edinburgh that the tourist never saw.
Ian Rankin lives in Edinburgh, and his award-winning 'Inspector Rebus' novels have topped the Sunday Times bestseller lists. The books have been dramatised for TV, and are translated into 22 languages. He was awarded the OBE in the Queen's Golden Jubilee Birthday Honours List in June 2002 for his services to literature.
Ian shows Sandi some of the places that have inspired his imagination and his writing. They visit Mary King Close, the `hidden streets` closed over in 1793, The National Museum of Scotland; and The Royal College of Surgeons Museum.
His latest book "Fishmarket Close" is published by Orion Books - ISBN: 0752851128
