Climbing in the Lake District


On this week's programme John McCarthy is standing in for Sandi Toksvig.听 He talks to his three guests about their passion for climbing.

Sir Ranulph Fiennes, 'World's Greatest Living Explorer'
Sir Ranulph has undertaken a series of expeditions including the Transglobe in which he and his companion Charles Burton became the first men in history to reach both Poles. He was awarded the OBE in 1993 and his expeditions have raised over 拢5 million for charity. In 2003, Ranulph Fiennes and Mike Stroud completed seven marathons in seven days. At the end of March he embarks on his latest project to reach the summit of Everest via the Great North Ridge.

Rosie Thomas, Writer
Rosie is the author of a number of celebrated novels. Once she was established as a writer and her children were older, she discovered a love of travelling and mountaineering. She began climbing in her 50s and since then has climbed in the Alps, the Himalayas and beyond. Her latest book 'Sun at Midnight' is published by Harper Collins, ISBN: 0-00-717351-2.

Jamie Andrew, Mountaineer and听writer
Jamie was brought up near Glasgow; in his teens he became an active mountaineer and rock climber. In 1999 he survived for five nights trapped on an Alpine mountain, where his close friend Jamie Fisher died beside him; he lost of all of his limbs to frostbite. Since the accident he has participated in many sporting activities, including skiing, snowboarding, paragliding and caving - as well as returning to mountaineering. His book 'Life and Limb'听 is published by Portrait Books, ISBN 0-7499-5052-8.
