On this week's programme Sandi Toksvig returns to her homeland of Denmark to Odense, the birthplace of famous Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, best known for children's fairytales. This weekend marks the bicentenary of Hans Christian Andersen's birth and a long series of celebrations throughout the year of the Danish poet and storyteller.
Odense is Denmark's third largest city situated on the Island of Funen in the middle of Denmark. Sandi visits Hans Christian Andersen's childhood home where he lived from 1807-1819 and The Hans Christian Andersen museum which contains information about his life and his work. She also explores The Tinder-Box Children's Cultural Centre, a house for children who are invited into the fairy tale world of the writer through story-telling and music.
Hans Christian Andersen was an ardent tourist in a time when travelling was inconvenient and slow. As he wrote in his memoirs "To Travel is to Live !". He travelled very frequently and covered great distances, something people usually didn't do at that time. He forged close friendships with great personalities such as Charles Dickens and Franz Liszt.
