SPACE TRAVEL

9听April 2005
Presented by Sandi Toksvig

SpaceShipOne

In this weeks programme Sandi is joined by Andrew Smith, who has met all the men living who have walked on the moon; Michael Hanlon, Science Editor at The Daily Mail and Natasha Loder, Science Correspondent at The Economist. They will discuss the future of space travel and tourism. Also former Spitting Image creator, Roger Law, will give his impressions of living and travelling in Australia.

Andrew Smith's interview with astronaut and moon walker, Charlie Duke in 1999, for the Observer made him realise that one day there would be no-one left who remembered the giddy thrill of gazing back at us from the surface of the moon. The thought shocked Andrew, and still does. Over a three year period between 1969 and 1972, twelve men made the longest and most eccentric of all journeys, and all were indelibly marked by it. Andrew set out to interview all the remaining astronauts who walked on the moon, and to find out how the experience had changed their lives for ever.
Andrew's book, "Moondust: In Search of the Men Who Fell to Earth"听 is published by Bloomsbury ISBN: 0747563683

Michael Hanlon is one of Britain's most successful science writers. He has been Science Editor at The Daily Mail for more than four years. He has written three space books to date, the most recent of which is "The Science of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"due to be published by Macmillan on 6th May. Michael defines this as a serious look at the light- hearted world of space travel.
He is also currently curator of the exhibition of the film of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy at The Science Museum.

Natasha Loder is the Science Correspondent at The Economist and has been interested in space tourism for many years. Like many people, she had a childhood fascination with space. Natasha always expected NASA would continue onwards from the moon landings of the late 60s and early 70s, to continue the quest into space. As years went on she got more and more disappointed that nothing was happening. When the shuttle crashed, she realised that the next American in space would be an entrepreneur. Natasha is optimistic about the future of Space Tourism.

Roger Law created the satirical puppet show Spitting Image with Peter Fluck in the 1980s. It was broadcast throughout the 80s and 90s.When the satirical bubble burst Roger made his way to Australia and has since been travelling around the country, often by thumbing a lift. He is fascinated by both the landscapes and creatures of Australia and spends most of his time drawing what he sees.He is currently over in the UK exhibiting the fruit of his travels at the Fine Art Society in London.
His Autobiography "Still Spitting at Sixty" is published by Harper Collins. ISBN 0 00 718166 3
