10am听21 May 2005
Presented by Sandi Toksvig
Aline Dobbie - writer
Aline Dobbie was brought up in India. She has never forgotten the experience and was inspired as a child by the closeness of the wildlife - she first rode on an elephant when she was six. She left the country when she was in her teens and didn't go back for听thirty three听years. From her infancy the author has been fascinated by that most magnificent and elusive of beasts, the tiger. Her second book on India, "India: The Tiger's Roar", published by Melrose Books, ISBN: 0954848020 is a personal account of her pilgrimage to India's great wildlife parks and tiger sanctuaries.
Roy Moxham - writer
Roy Moxham, former tea planter and gallery owner, turned book conservator, was searching among the volumes in a second-hand bookshop on the corner of London's Charing Cross Road when he came across "Rambles and Reflections of an Indian Official" by Major-General Sir W.H. Sleeman KCB, first published in 1893. Roy Moxham was beguiled by a footnote which quoted Lytton Strachey's father, Sir John Strachey about an "immense impenetrable hedge". "The Great Hedge of India" is published by Constable and Robinson, ISBN 1841194670.
Tarun Tejpal - journalist
Tarun Tejpal is the founder and editor-in chief of Tehelka -a news and ideas magazine on the web and relaunched as a national weekly paper. He is the co-founder of the publishing house Indialink, and written for The Paris Review, The Guardian, The FT and Prospect. He has been editor of India Today and The Indian Express groups and Outlook, India's premier news magazine. "The Alchemy of Desire" is published by Picador, ISBN: 033043554X.
Jules Stewart - writer
In his book "Khyber Rifles" published by Sutton Publishing, ISBN: 075093963X, Jules Stewart tells the incredible story of Colonel Sir Robert Warburton, the man who raised the Khyber Rifles in 1878, and describes the Khyber Rifles in action. In the past two years they have been actively involved in the war against Al Qaeda and the opium trade. Most recently they set up the first permanent military presence in the forbidden tribal territory of Tirah, to seal the border against Al Qaeda militants and eradicate the opium trade.
