Discovering Dorothea by Karolyn Shindler published by Harper Collins

This week's guests:

Karolyn Shindler
Biographer Karolyn Shindler has been tracing the exploits of Edwardian palaeontologist Dorothea Bate, a woman who might have been lost to us but for the diaries and labels dotted around the Natural History Museum.

In 1998 Karolyn Shindler took her son to the Myths and Monsters Exhibition at the National history Museum - where on one stand with a huge model of the Cyclops, was a skull of an extinct elephant. Next to it was a diary from 1901 belonging to Dorothea Minola Alice Bate. Then aged 22 she'd travelled to Cyprus and discovered the fossilized remains of pigmy hippo and elephants there.

Karolyn has pieced together clues about Dorothea from her notebooks.
