John McCarthy
is in Ethiopian rebel country and discovers the best way to stay safe when travelling.

ETHIOPIA
Philip Marsden first visited Ethiopia in the early 1980s, at the age of twenty-one.听 He had hoped to visit Tigray and the ancient capital of Aksum, but was prevented from doing so because the country was then under the Marxist Derg regime.听 Twenty years later, Philip returned to Ethiopia and made an arduous 400 mile trek over the mountains to complete his journey.听 He recounts his experience in his latest book Chains of Heaven: An Ethiopian Romance.

TRAVEL SURVIVAL
Biographer and travel writer, Sara Wheeler spent seven months in the Antarctic researching her book, Terra Incognita, in the mid-1990s.听 Sara has travelled extensively in many parts of the world and went through rigorous training, including time at Survival School, to prepare for her exploits.

Doug Lansky is the author of the Rough Guide to Travel Survival.听 He has travelled to more than 100 countries and shares some practical advice for staying safe and well, while away.听
