MARIA THERESA THALER
Sandi Toksvig discovers the Austrian coin that conquered the Middle East. The Maria Theresa Thaler was first minted in the 18th century in the reign of Maria Theresa of Austria, the Holy Roman Empress.听 This common currency is still used across the Middle East and northern Africa and can be found in Arabian jewellery and in souks.听 Sandi is joined by Clara Semple whose book A Silver Legend: The Story of the Maria Theresa Thaler uncovers the story of this remarkable coin.
MONEY
David Else, writer of Lonely Planet guides' to Africa and author of Africa on a Shoestring, has spent much time travelling in some of the more out of the way places on the continent. He shares some useful insights into managing money whilst touring.
AFRICAN ELEPHANTS
Elephants in the national parks of southern Africa are becoming too numerous for their own good and that of other wildlife.听 What are the solutions to the problems caused by this excess of elephants?听 Sandi Toksvig discusses with David Else, a travel writer specializing in Africa and Graham Boynton Group Travel Editor of the Daily and Sunday Telegraph, the proposed cull of several thousand of the Kruger Park's elephants.听 The cull has raised objections from conservation groups around the world and they are now proposing a tourist boycott of South Africa.
