TRISTAN DA CUNHA
Tristan da Cunha is considered one of the most remote human settlements on earth.听 A group of islands in the South Atlantic marooned almost midway, in the four thousand mile stretch of sea between the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa and the South American coastline. It is the home to just under 300 British citizens living in its capital Edinburgh.
The islanders are currently celebrating an anniversary.听 It is 500 years since they were first discovered, or rather sighted, by Portuguese mariner, Trist茫o da Cunha in 1506.听 A small population has resided on Tristan since the early nineteenth century but in 1961, when the island volcano erupted, the islanders were evacuated. Many of them returned in 1963.
Rob Crossan who has just travelled back from Tristan shares his experience.
